Nicola Smart

Cardiovascular Biologist

Nicola has a peculiar fascination with blood vessels!  Through her research, she hopes to understand how they form in the developing embryo, how they become dysfunctional in disease and how they may (one day) be regenerated to benefit heart failure patients.  After a BSc in Biochemistry at the University of Kent and a PhD investigating the regulation of cellular signalling pathways at RVC London, Nicola focussed on the heart and vasculature during her post-doc years at UCL, before moving to Oxford to set up her lab in 2012. For most of her career to date, Nicola has been funded by the British Heart Foundation and her Fellowship is additionally supported by the family of Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels, who died following a heart attack in 1964.
