Matthew Wijers

Zoologist

I was born and raised in Zimbabwe and spent most of my childhood exploring nature. After leaving school, I spent a year volunteering for a lion research project in Hwange National Park which convinced me to pursue a career in wildlife conservation. I first studied Conservation Ecology at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and then moved to Oxford where my research has focussed on developing and testing new sensor devices for tracking and monitoring African lions. I really enjoy working with new gadgets and am excited about the ways in which technology is helping us to improve our understanding of particular animal species that have previously been very difficult to study.
