James Munro
Applied Mathematician
I studied Mathematics at university and did my PhD research in fluid dynamics at the University of Cambridge. I didn’t know that was something you could do with Mathematics when I started! I really liked having the chance to apply all the mathematical tools that I’d learned to a physical problem with a strong visual component. I worked on the fluid motion driven by the merging of two liquid droplets; there was a previous mathematical theory, but it didn’t match the photos taken in experiments with real droplets. If in doubt, try more mathematics! Since completing my PhD I’ve moved to Oxford, where I primarily work on admissions and outreach. I host the Oxford Online Maths Club (a free casual mathematics livestream on YouTube) and I occasionally appear on the University’s social media with applications of mathematics, sometimes involving Skittles (Skittles claim that no two bags are the same. But I’ve done some counting…)!
