Bernie Hogan

Computational Social Scientist

Bernie Hogan’s first computer was a Commodore 64 back in 1989. Since then, he’s done university degrees specialising in Sociology and Computer Science as well as interned and consulted at Microsoft Research. These days he focuses mainly on how to support and foster good relationships online. This comes in the form of outreach on online dating (including funded work with eHarmony and Tavistock Relationships as well as expert interviews for BBC, ITV, Vice media among others), software for interviews about relationships, and academic writing. Bernie has always sought to bring technology into practice to help people see more of their social networks and their social worlds using data from sources as diverse as Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, and Reddit. Most recently he published his first book, a textbook on computational social science for Sage, “From Social Science to Data Science”.
